The method

Each piece begins in a hardback book, drawn in fibre pen and finished in coloured pencil. The fabric is written beside the drawing before the shape is settled — swirled shimmering blue emerald velvet, beige chiffon silky with black polka dots, brown suede covered buttons — so the cloth decides the cut rather than the other way round.

Some pages carry a whole outfit and some carry a single earring, drawn twice: once close up, and once at the size you would actually wear. Where a piece exists in more than one colour, the alternatives are pencilled in the margin. The house has kept those notes exactly as they were written.

  The house’s first travelling collection. Everything for a day and a half away — the lunch, the walk, the evening — and not one thing more.

  Stones chosen for colour before value, set plainly and drawn twice: once close up, and once at the size you would actually wear.

  A lace top, a flared jean, a gold belt. Style is what you put on first and build outwards from.

  A study in silhouette. Each piece begins as a flat geometric shape and only becomes a garment once it is on.

  Waistcoats, frilled collars, ribbed jersey and a great deal of denim. The pieces drawn most often, and therefore wanted most.

  Two gowns, and the belt, the flats and the headband that finish them. Drawn late, which is the correct time to draw evening wear.

The drawing goes with the piece

A drawing is not a step on the way to a garment; it is half of what the garment is. So every order leaves the house with a high-resolution copy of the original page — creases, fabric notes, crossings-out and all. You are buying both.
